Move on organic because we have won a great victory to stopping the GMO”s! The “Monsanto Protection Act” was killed in the Senate on September 26th!!! Genetically modified foods are toxic to our bodies and planet. GMOs are polluting, poisoning our food and land and by killing this rider we have taken a giant step forward to changing our future.
Genetically modified foods have been linked to many serious health problems and many think they are one of the most serious dangers of the 21st century. At one time all farmers worked with Nature, but now we have made science labs of farming and foods for our own design that are artificial and can only lead to disaster. We have all become human experiments without our consent, for Profit by the big corporations. One of the leading company that produces GMOs is Monsanto.
A genetically modified plant or food has been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals and this is not part of the natural process of nature. When we choose to alternate nature we are playing Russia roulette with our lives and our planet.
Professor Richard Lacey, a microbiologist, medical doctor, and Professor of Food Safety at Leeds University who is against genetically modified foods due to the many health risks had this to say, “The fact is, it is virtually impossible to even conceive of a testing procedure to assess the health effects of genetically engineered foods when introduced into the food chain, nor is there any valid nutritional or public interest reason for their introduction.”
“The process of genetic engineering always involves the risk of altering the genetics and cellular functioning of a food organism in unanticipated ways. These unanticipated alterations can result in GE foods being allergenic, toxic, or reduced in nutritional value”. – Professor John Fagan, award-winning Geneticist, Maharishi University of Management, Iowa, USA.
Some of the Health and Environmental Hazards of Genetically Modified Foods:
- Animal toxicity studies have shown that GM foods can affect human organs and whole body systems. They may cause some common toxic effects such as hepatic, pancreatic, renal, or reproductive effects.
- May affect or alter the hematological, biochemical, and immunologic parameters.
- GMO’s have been linked to cancer.
- GM foods have reduced the effect of pesticides and have caused super weeds.
- Pollen from B.t. corn caused high mortality rates in monarch butterfly caterpillars.
- Life threatening food allergies.
- Birth defects and infertility issues.
- Loss of nutritional value in the foods.
- Destruction of farm land.
- Decline of the bee colonies in North America

The U.S. Congress and president had approved what is referred to as the “Monsanto Protection Act” which bans the courts from stopping the sale of Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds. This Monsanto act was added secretly this past spring to a government funding bill in that was originally established in the spring of 2012. The Center for Food Safety had this to say — The “Monsanto Protection Act” represents a serious assault on the fundamental safeguards of our judicial system and would negatively impact farmers, the environment and public health across America. The legislation would strip federal courts of their authority to halt the sale and planting of an illegal, potentially hazardous GE crop and compel USDA to allow continued planting of that same crop upon request.
But I have good news of a great Victory for you and all humanity. In response in May 2013, two million people in over 50 countries expressed outrage over Monsanto’s desire to own the food supply through genetically-altered (and patented) seeds that threaten all life on this planet. These actions of all these people were led by The Center for Food Safety, which is a national, non-profit organization that is devoted to protecting human health and the environment by curbing the use of harmful production technologies and promoting organic and other sustainable farming methods. Over 120 of the worlds leading companies supported and contributed to senting a letter to Senate leadership calling on them to exclude the rider from consideration in the short-term spending bill. All the work was not in vain! The Center for Food Safety reports The Monsanto act has been killed in the Senate on September 26th, 2013.
According to the Washington Post the GMO provision –– Monsanto and several other major growers genetically modified seeds supported the provision. Their explanation is that it protected conventional farmers that grow and produce genetically modified crops. The legislation would strip federal courts of their authority to halt the sale and planting of an illegal, potentially hazardous GE crop and compel USDA to allow continued planting of that same crop upon request. According to Monsanto this was intended to protect farmers from disruption caused by frivolous lawsuits.
Organic advocates and concerned citizens have a totally different view — they believe it just a ploy for big corporations to avoid court review and make profit at the cost of our health and destruction of the environment.
“Members of Congress and congressional staffers have become very aware of this issue,” said Dave Murphy, founder and executive director of Food Democracy Now, which generated thousands of calls to Capitol Hill urging lawmakers to remove the provision. Murphy praised Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) for leading the effort in the Senate.
Personally I don’t see anything frivolous about protecting our rights to protect our environment and our health. It all seems to me that Monsanto and the big corporations want world food control at any cost!
Yes this is a great victory! But we need to keep on fighting for our right to know what is in our food and to stop the destruction from GMO’s. We have a right to know and to choose what we eat without fear how it will harm our health and how it will destroy our earth. I applaud all those who have supported and contributed to this victory for organic, safe foods and saving our precious world for our children and all future generations. Keep the fight up — I know I am!
Please remember to support and vote yes on I-522 bill on November 6th!
