“Curbing the Effects of Cancer & Treatment with Proper Nutrition!”

'Cancer & the Proper Nutrition"Today my friends, I would like to share with you an article that was written by Jillian Mckee, who has worked as the Complementary Medicine Advocate at the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance since June of 2009. Jillian spends most her time on outreach efforts and spreading information about the integration of complementary and alternative medicine when used in conjunction with traditional cancer treatment.

Curbing the Effects of Cancer and Treatment with Proper Nutrition

From the initial diagnosis to remission, nutrition plays an important part in helping the body fight cancers like mesothelioma. Cancer and cancer treatments stress the body and affect the way individuals tolerate foods. By working with health care providers, patients can maintain beneficial nutrition goals. Nutritious food helps patients remain strong and give them energy throughout treatment. With the body properly fueled, patients have a lower chance of infection. Sufficient nutrition also assists the body in healing and recovery.

The National Cancer Society discusses the need for maintaining a proper diet and helpful hints for improving treatments and its side effects. Nutritionists suggest stocking pantries and freezers with food before treatment to eliminate the need for shopping. Preparing meals in advance and freezing meal-sized portions also makes life easier. Family and friends can also help accomplish these tasks for patients.

Dieticians recommend consuming at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. In addition, whole grains from cereals and pasta and equally as vital. These foods contain essential minerals, vitamins, and much needed fiber, minimizing the chance of constipation. Increasing fluid intake may also help, but physicians warn that consuming fluids with meals may reduce one’s appetite.

Patients must also ensure that they eat enough protein rich foods in the form of meats, poultry, fish and low-fat dairy products. Beans, boiled eggs, and nuts are great choices for these. Meals should be nutritious and healthy by containing fewer fats, usually done by baking or broiling.

During treatment large meals are often difficult to tolerate. Nutritionists suggest reducing the size of meal, but increasing their frequency to every three to four hours. If a patient only desires a salad or soup in lieu of a meal, try increasing their nutrition by adding cooked meats, nuts, or seeds. Including favorite or even new foods may also increase the desire to eat.

When cancer treatment alters taste and smell of food, herbs and spices can often make foods more appealing. Poor appetite often leads to undernourishment. Eating healthy snacks can also aid in maintaining a nutritious diet. Hard-boiled eggs add protein to salads, but they can also be enjoyed as a snack. Try protein shakes or milk shakes with low fat dairy products and fresh fruits. Liquid protein supplements can come in a variety of flavors and prove helpful in maintaining nutrition levels. Snack on cheese and crackers, ice cream, yogurt, or peanut butter on toast for other alternatives.

After treatments, patients often experience effects that diminish the desire for food. By continuing the diet regimen used during treatment, patients continue receiving adequate nutrition. Increasingly physicians suggest an active lifestyle throughout the treatment process. Exercise provides many benefits including an increased appetite.

Because cancer is increasing at such epidemic rates I thank Jillian for allowing me to post this article and to share it with all of you. We all need to be aware of the affects our environment and foods we eat whether we have cancer or just trying to stay healthy in a polluted world.

“11 Steps to Get Your Gut Right!”

Hi, there! Does your gut give you problems? Do you belch, have indigestion, or just feel miserable! Not a very pleasant subject, but unfortunately, it is a reality for millions of people!

So today let’s talk about our digestive system and how to keep it healthy, which will help our whole body be healthy.

Unfortunately, digestive stress is so common today that most of us consider it as normal. But your digestion is at the heart of your detox system, it can cause you whole immune system to breakdown,  and plays a vital role in your health and energy levels. In fact, your digestive system has its own hormonal system. Your diet and what you put into body, lifestyle, environmental toxins that we are consistently exposed to are some of the most important factors in keeping this fragile balance.

If our gut get our of whack it will affect every other function of the body. The various hormones that the gut produces are essential to a proper digestion and digestive system health.

When the hormones are out of balance, the immune system is too, and this affects the detox system which lets our whole body open to many illnesses and diseases.

Gut hormones, such as leptin, ghrelin, cholecystokinin as well as other peptides, tells you when you’re hungry and when you’re not, when to store fat and controls other various bodily functions.

When the immune system is out balance we will not have the proper flora (the good bacteria) in our gut lining. This can lead to leaky gut, food allergies, and many other health problems

So lets ask ourselves some questions that might be able to determine if out digestive system is not working properly. Are you constantly hunger, do you have unexplained weight gain, skin problems and digestive conditions.

What we should be looking for to decide if we have a problem:

  • Do you have frequent bloating, gas, belching?
  •  frequent diarrhea or constipation, and flatulence?
  • Do you have heartburn more than once a week, and are you rarely hungry in the morning?
  • Do you have skin problems or have weak and peeling fingernails?
  • Do you suffer from bad breath frequently?
  •  Do you have abdominal pain after eating or feel like nothing you eat agrees with you?
  • Do you feel full after eating a regular-sized meal?

If you have any of these symptoms, your digestive tract might not be at its best and it might be a good idea to consider taking some positive steps to try to get your gut in balance.

There are many things you can do to help your digestion to get back on track. One very positive step is to help your body to detox naturally, it’s important to keep your digestion healthy. Here’s a few suggestions that you can do.

Tips to help avoid and help digestive stress:

1. Take your time to eat and chew well.

2. Avoid sugars, food additives, and synthetic dyes.

3.  Drink plenty of pure water (non-chlorinated).

4. Eat fiber-rich foods and incorporate more raw food in your diet.

5. Exercise daily, breathe deeply, and avoid stress as much as possible.

6. Don’t use unnecessary medicine , try a herbal remedies or alternative solutions first!

7. Research hidden food allergies and keep a food dairy if you think that you might have an allergy or sensitivity to certain foods.

8. Eat varied, with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

9.  Look for vitamin deficiencies, possibly try taking a good quality multi-vitamin.

10. Avoid using strong laxatives and repeated use of harsh detox cleanses. Cleansing naturally is much healthier.

11. Try taking a probiotic regularly to help get your gut back in balance.

I sincerely hope this information will help to guide you to take a look at your health and if needed take the proper steps to get your gut healthy!

“MSG, Aspartame & Their Imitator’s”

"Aspartame & the Imitators"Today my friends, I would like to discuss  food additives and some of the serious health issues and side effects that they can cause. Food additives are in most food products, unless they are organic and many of us do not even realize what we are putting in our bodies.

For decades the food industry has continually created new chemicals to manipulate, preserve, and transform our food. By using chemicals, scientists are able to mimic natural flavors, color foods to make them look more natural or fresh and make them more appealing to us the consumer. They also preserve foods for longer for longer shelf life, to improve the flavor, and supposedly increase nutritional value.

I would like to concentrate mainly on MSG & ASPARTAME because they are known to be 2 of the worse additives and are so commonly used!

Aspartame & MSG and other neurotoxins are chemicals, among others, added to food to stimulate hunger and disrupt normal appetite control? It’s a clever (but downright devious) strategy for selling more food and boosting the profits of food corporations.

Studies have shown that food additives may cause these health problem:

    • Studies have shown that lifelong consumption may increase neurological problems
    • obesity & weight gain
    • risk of cancer and tumors
    • cause you to get diabetes
    • give you heart disease
    • make you have high blood pressure
    • cause hormone imbalances
    • migraines

"Aspartame, MSG the Imitators"MSG & ASPARTAME!

Look on labels for the following information.

Foods ALWAYS contain MSG when these words are on the label:

  • MSG, Mono-sodium glutamate, Glutamate, Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, Hydrolyzed plant protein, Autolyzed plant protein, Sodium caseinate, Calcium caseinate, Textured vegetable protein, Yeast extract, Yeast nutrient, Autolyzed yeast, Autolyzed yeast extract

Food ingredients that MIGHT show hidden MSG:

  • Annatto, Flavoring, Seasonings, Protein fortified, Bouillon, Broth, Caramel, Malt extract, Soy protein isolate, Soy protein concentrate, Spices, Stock, Whey protein isolate

Common foods that may contain MSG or Aspartame:

  • Chinese food, Sauces, Bouillon/Stock, Packaged soups, Processed meat substitute, Salad dressings, Vegan burgers, Commercial marinades, Flavored chips, Soft drinks, Fruit cocktails, Chewing gum, Diet products

I hope this information has been helpful and that you examine all labels very carefully! I suggest that you try to eat Organic or fresh products from local harvest farms, or local farmer’s market when possible. Remember it’s you and your family health that is at risk! Think about the increase of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and ask yourself if it is really worth taking the risk?

“Let’s Make It Simple & Learn What Green Living Is”

"Simple Green Living"Today my friends, I would like to discuss what is “Green Living” is!  Green Living is a life philosophy and a way of life that people commit to. Your aim is to conduct all aspects of your live to the awareness of saving the earth and its environment.

If you are a supporter of Green living, means that you are committed to eco friendly products that are safe for our environment to minimize the size of your ecological footprint.

What Is Green Lifestyle?

Ecological consciousness and care for the earth involve the choices we make and that they create an environmental impact! These choices will preserve the earth for our children, all future generations and all life forms whether animal, human or plant.

What does this include:

  • Green living includes the conservation of resources
  •  recycling
  •  sustainability, green construction
  •  alternative energy
  •  organic food choices & products
  •  environmentally  friendly products -including cleaning, paint, any product even personal care that do not contain chemicals or harmful toxins.
  • no pesticides or toxins added to the environment

What is Green Technology?

  • Green technology” encompasses a continuously evolving group of methods and materials, from techniques for generating energy to non-toxic cleaning products.
  • Environmentally preferred purchasing –This government innovation involves the search for products whose contents and methods of production have the smallest possible impact on the environment, and mandates that these be the preferred products for government purchasing.
  •  Developing green technology includes toxic-waste-eating trees, smart electricity grids and floating environmental sensors.

What are Green Buildings?

  • A green building, or a sustainable building, is a structure that is designed, built, renovated, operated, or reused in an ecological and resource-efficient manner.
  •  Green buildings are designed to meet certain goals such as protecting occupant health; improving employee productivity; using energy, water, and other resources more efficiently; and reducing the overall impact to the environment.

What is Green Energy?

  • EPA defines green power as electricity produced from solar, wind, geothermal, bio-gas, biomass, and low-impact small hydroelectric sources. Customers often buy green power for avoided environmental impacts and its greenhouse gas reduction benefits.
  •  Alternative energy is related to green living as it includes energy alternatives to traditional fossil fuels.

What does Organic mean?

  • Organic food refers to food items that are produced, processed and packaged without using chemicals.
  • The word “organic” refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat.
  •  Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution.
  • Farmers who grow organic produce and meat use alternative methods to control weeds and prevent livestock disease such as they may conduct more advanced crop rotations and spread mulch or manure to keep weeds at bay.
  • They don’t use chemical and toxic pesticides for weed control or give antibiotic’s and hormones to their animals that conventional farmer’s practice.

What is Renewable Energy?

  • Renewable energy is energy comes from living things or is natural
  •  The energy that is used is returned to the environment in a re-usable form
  •  the source of energy is not depleted by using it
  •  the energy is “green” – it does not damage or cause environment harm
  • Renewable energy encourages use of solar (sunlight), wind, tide,
  • geothermal heat, and other alternative forms of energy.

Living Sustainability:

  • Sustainability is about preserving the environment and natural resources that God gave us. It is the long-term maintenance and responsibility, which has environmental, economic, and social dimensions.
  •  It is about sustaining our future and environment through green living.
  •  There are specific fields within it like sustainable architecture, sustainable agriculture, and sustainable development

We all have the responsibility to uphold  and do our part in “Saving our Planet Earth” Green living habits are worthwhile and I believe have become a necessity for life to continue. It doesn’t matter what our circumstances, whether we are privileged or not we all must do our part. One small step each day can leave a giant footprint on our ecological world!

“Type 2 Diabetes and Pesticides – Is There A Link?”

"Diabetic & Pesticides"Today my friends, I would like to discuss a disease that is near epidemic levels, which is Type 2 Diabetes and its relationship to pesticides.

People with relatively high levels of certain pesticides in their blood may have an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes, particularly if they are overweight. Being overweight has also been linked to some of the compounds in pesticides that have shown to promote obesity.

This study was reported in the journal Diabetes Care and there have been numerous other studies linking chemical pollutants to diabetes. We will discuss these further.

First let’s discuss what Type 2 diabetes actually is:

It is  often called non-insulin dependent diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes, affecting 90% – 95% of the 21 million people with diabetes.

"Diabetic and Pesticides"Now lets discuss the connection between Type 2 Diabetes and Pesticides:

According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) our diet in the US  is the main potential source of exposure to many of these compounds with fatty foods, like dairy products and oily fish.

Some studies have found a connection between diabetes risk and exposure to older pesticides known as organochlorines, PCBs, and other chemicals that are considered  “persistent organic pollutants”. The pollutants although banned in the U.S. and other developed countries after research linked them to many health problems including cancer, in the 1970′s.

Unfortunately, these chemicals are just as the name suggest, “Persistent”, they remain in the environment for years and build up in animal and human body fat.

We still have many environmental toxins and pesticides that we are exposed to daily that have not been banned and have also been linked to Type 2 Diabetes!

Information on some of the studies and research to the connection:

Riikka Airaksinen of Finland’s National Institute for Health and Welfare led the study for the effects of persistent organic pollutants which is believed to impair the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, this explains the link to Type 2 Diabetes.

Some pesticides are toxic to the immune system, and some are endocrine (hormone) disruptor. Some pesticides are contaminated with dioxin, which may play a role in their toxicity. See this study– (Saldana et al. 2007).

The endocrine system of the body is made up of glands that secrete hormones. The pancreas, for example, is an endocrine organ that secretes the hormone insulin. Many substances can interfere with the endocrine system of animals, including humans, they are called “endocrine disruptor’s.” Endocrine disruption is important because hormones play a critical role in controlling how the body develops. A number of environmental contaminants (as well some pharmaceuticals) are endocrine disruptor’s. See this study– (Hotchkiss et al. 2008)

A number of the contaminants considered here, including arsenic, some persistent organic pollutants such as PCBs and dioxin, bisphenol A, phthalates, some pesticides, and possibly nitrate, are considered endocrine disruptors. (Please visit those pages for studies on these contaminants.)

All of this research and numerous study shows that there is evidence that various pesticides may contribute to the development of type 2 and gestational diabetes.

Dr. David Jacobs , a professor of epidemiology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis who has worked on some of this research said “they are generally all around us in fatty tissues of living organisms.” “These chemicals are released in various ways, he said, and are being constantly recycled.”

“Pesticides and other industrial chemicals in use now are safer, in the sense of not being persistent”, Jacob said, “But” he added, “a chemical that is bad for the health of one life form, insects and weeds, is not likely to be good for humans. We need much better and more thorough safety testing for substances that we use in industry and for pest control.”

I must admit I was not aware of most of this information about pesticides and Type 2 Diabetes until I started researching it myself!

One way to help our bodies rid itself from these pesticides and toxins is to try to detox the body (Click Here to Order Native Remedies Detox Drop)  eat as much organic food or local harvest as possible! Hopefully we have all benefited and learned valuable information that will help us live a healthier lifestyle!

“Stand Together & We Can Prevent Global Warming”

"Prevent Global Warming"Today my friends, I would like to discuss some ways to prevent global warming that I believe is a necessity for all of us each and everyday. We all need to become more aware of the world around us, what is happening to our planet, and how we can help change the effects and damage to our planet!

It is high time we noticed effects of industrialization and technological progress that has quietly yet continuously eked away at the delicate balance of the planet’s atmosphere and ecosystem.

What is global warming & what are the causes?

  • Global warming is essentially a change in climatic conditions on the ground.
  • Changes in weather patterns, that may lead to natural disasters.
  • Some of the factors that cause global warming emissions are volcanic and solar activity.
  • Carbon dioxide contributes to about 12% of the greenhouse gases, but water vapor contributes to 36% of greenhouse gases.
  •  Methane causes 5-10% of global warming, where as the ozone 3-7% of greenhouse gases.
  • Falling of forests for agriculture, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased considerably.
  • Rain forests and tropical forests around the world are being cut down to fulfill demand for wood and paper, this is causing deforestation.
  •  Scientists believe that the industrialization of the press caused various gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, known to contribute to global warming.
  • Large ice masses that initially adorned both the north and south poles are melting as a very fast speed. This shows warming is affecting us since the water levels will increase drastically and melting of ice masses will also change climatic conditions all around the world. Effects of which will be difficult for humans and animals alike.
  • Global warming is also the result of using fossil fuels like petrol, diesel, CNG, etc. with industrialization there has been growth in the number of car owners, which increased global warming.

It is not difficult to notice that global warming has changed the climate of the world!

What Can You Do To Help Stop Global Warming?

  • You can prevent global warming by uniting against it. It does not matter what your place of residence may be you can contribute towards reforestation and help reduce green house gases and carbon dioxide considerably. Increasing forests is a good and a constructive alternative to solving this problem of global warming. Simply replanting the trees that have been cut off and letting these grow back again naturally.
  • The trees in the tropical rain forests are our earth’s lungs. Reduction in these forests will accelerate the disaster brought in by global warming.
  • You can also help in cooling the earth down substantially. A little saving of water, fuel, electricity, and  recycle, reuse, every small step per person can make a lot of difference to our planet.
  •  Check into changing to an alternative energy – solar or wind turbine.
  •  Some organizations have opened their websites so that they can spread awareness about the current situation among the general public. They will also educate you about how a small contribution from you will make a ton of difference in world’s ecological climate. Check out– Help Sitkans reduce their carbon footprint and prepare for the effects of a changing climate through education and community action. http://www.sitkaglobalwarming.org/
  • Buy Deforested Land, help it regenerate, and protect it from exploitation again forever. You can do something about Global Warming and deforestation right now. The Wild Again Reforestation Trust relies on public donations to purchase deforested land.

These organizations will also educate you about how a small contribution can make a ton of difference in world’s ecological climate. Several governments around the world are taking steps and implementing laws that will help prevent production of green house gases and make the world a better place for our children and all future generations. These laws will take time in being implemented, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t do small things everyday to help our environment and help save our planet. You can donate money, or become a volunteer, and let your voice be heard – give your opinion! We have one planet that is a gift from God! – It is our job to undue the damage and change our future!

“That Bright Yellow Weed – Dandelion!”

Today my friends, I would like to discuss a weed called Dandelion! If you are like most people you don’t think about dandelions as something that would be healing or having such amazing medicinal qualities, but they do! Well, you have to admit that if you really think about it God put those weeds on earth for a purpose and in Ancient times they used the healing power that the earth provided. Dandelion’s were one of those!

Don’t those brilliant yellow flowers remind you of energy and sunshine. Yea, I know that they can be a problem when they get in your lawn or garden, believe me I spent plenty of time pulling them out of my garden. But more importantly those weeds are one of nature’s miracle treatments and that is what we are going to discuss today!

Consumed as a drink or as salad, dandelion is a great remedy. Dandelion can be used as vegetable. A healthy salad can be prepared from a handful of young dandelion leaves mixed with parsley and dill, oil and vinegar, which should be consumed before other meals. It’s best to pick only the new leaves of the young plants as they can become bitter once the plant has flowered.

"Dandelion and their health benefits"Some of the Medicinal and Health Benefits:

Bone Health:  Dandelion helps keep our bones healthy because is so rich in calcium, that we know is essential for growth and strength of bones. It also has high levels of antioxidants like vitamin-C and Luteolin, which protect bones as we age from the damage of free radicals.

Diabetes:  Dandelion juice can help diabetic patients by stimulating production of insulin from the pancreas and will in turn help keep the blood sugar level low. From the diuretic properties of dandelion, that helps the diabetic urinate more, and will remove extra sugar from the body.

Urinary Disorders: Dandelion actually means in French “urinate in bed”  which the name came from the fact that it is highly diuretic in nature.   Because of its diuretic activity, dandelion is a wonderful way to detox the kidneys and urinary system, is known for it ability to clean deposits of toxic substances and helps to disinfect microbial growth. Another benefit from the diuretic properties of dandelion is since our urine has up to 4% fats this means that more water and fats are lost by urinating and this will promote weight loss without side effects.

Skin Care: Dandelion sap or milk, which is highly alkaline and has germicidal, insecticidal, and fungicidal properties, is useful in treating skin diseases that are caused by microbial and fungal infection. Dandelion also eliminates toxins, is a diuretic stimulant and antioxidant which helps treat eczema, acne and other skin diseases.

Cancer: Dandelion is high in antioxidants such as vitamin-C and Luteolin which reduces the free radicals in the body, and with the detoxifying abilities this all reduces the risk of cancer.

Liver, Gall Bladder, and Jaundice: Dandelion is one of the best wild plants for your liver.  Jaundice, a disorder of the liver, which starts over producing bile and then gets into the blood stream damaging the metabolism.  Dandelion helps treat jaundice because it increase the biliary secretion, removes excess bile from the body, and fights the viral infection.  Dandelion is recommended as an adjuvant in all the diseases that involve a glandular disequilibrium. Dandelion is very beneficial for gall bladder as it improves  functioning, protects ill effects of oxidants and infections and regulates secretions.

Anemia: Dandelion has iron, vitamin and protein content. While iron is the integral part of hemoglobin in the blood, vitamins (particularly vitamin-B), and protein are essential for formation of red blood cells, which is why dandelion can help anemia.

High Blood Pressure: Since dandelion is a diuretic it helps lower blood pressure by increasing both quantity and frequency of urination. Fiber in dandelion is also helps to reduce cholesterol, and the potassium helps by replacing sodium.

I hope this information has been helpful to you. I can remember as a child that my grandmother and mother couldn’t wait until spring to send us kids out to gather fresh dandelion which they loved to eat. My grandmother lived to be 82  and my mother is 87 years old and pretty healthy–maybe it has something to do with the DANDELION!!

“8 Plus Ways To Go Green, Organic, & Be Environmentally Friendly for MOM!

"Mother's Day"Today my friends, I would like to discuss — Mother’s Day which is that special day that we celebrate that special person that gave us life or raised us. Every mother deserves the best, including Mother Earth.  I will give on a little history on how Mother’s Day started and how we can celebrate our own Mother and Mother Earth. We can give a true give of love if we give organic and green gifts that will be healthy for us and  our environment to ensure that we can spend many more Mother’s Day with our families.

Just some history about Mother’s Day:

One of the earliest historical records of a society celebrating a Mother deity can be found among the ancient Egyptians, who held an annual festival to honor the goddess Isis, who was commonly regarded as the Mother of the pharaohs. Her stern, yet handsome head is typically crowned by a pair of bull horns enclosing a fiery sun orb. She is most often depicted sitting on a throne. If you would like to read more about this click here.

Many changes and traditions in different parts of the world for Mother’s Day throughout the centuries changed.

Mothers Day In America:

As history continues when the first English settlers came to America, they discontinued the tradition of Mothering Day, but the British holiday continued. Some believe that the settlers’ discontinuation of Mothering Day was that they just didn’t have time.  Remember they lived under harsh conditions and survival was very difficult. Others think that Mothering Day conflicted with their Puritan ideals.

The first North American Mother’s Day was conceptualized with Julia Ward Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870. This woman had also wrote the “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” 12 years earlier.

Howe had become so distraught by the death and carnage of the Civil War that she called on Mother’s to come together and protest what she saw as the futility of their Sons killing the Sons of other Mothers. With the following, she called for an international Mother’s Day celebrating peace and motherhood and although many changes occurred after that Howe had planted the seed that would blossom into what we know as Mother’s Day today.

In 1908 a U.S. Senator from Nebraska, Elmer Burkett, proposed making Mother’s Day a national holiday at the request of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). The proposal was defeated, but by 1909 forty-six states were holding Mother’s Day services as well as parts of Canada and Mexico.  In 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed it into national observance, declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Today over 70 countries celebrate and honor Mother’s Day!

“Ways to Avoid Allergies Problems While Camping”

"Allergies and Camping"Today my friends, I would like to discuss ways to avoid allergies while camping. This is the time of year that many of us are enjoying the outdoors and one of the most popular get a ways for the family is camping and convening with nature. Sleeping under the stars, toasting marshmallows over an open fire, hiking through the woods, and learning about the wonders of nature.   This can be a very enjoyable time, but if someone in your family suffers from outdoor allergies it can certainly expose you to a series of  dangers.

Let me give you some tips to help you stay healthy and to allow you to enjoy the wilderness experience!

Please plan ahead by implementing some important prevention and treatment strategies!

 1. Schedule your camping trip around the allergy seasons and accord to the allergies that your family member or members suffer from so that you can avoid being outdoors when your triggers will be in full force. For instance, tree pollen can be a problem from late spring through early summer, while ragweed can be prevalent during July and August.

2. Check the forecast for pollen count and ozone levels according to the location where you are camping and schedule your trip while the allergens are lowest.

3. Be prepared for insect bites and stings, exposure to poison ivy, and make sure you have all allergy medication and/or antihistamines, topical anti-itch creams, especially an EpiPen if one of your family members is in danger of anaphylactic reaction.

4. Make sure your tent is allergy-free. If it’s been stored in a shed or somewhere that is dusty, air it out and give it a thorough cleaning to remove dust mites and other allergens that may be lingering in the fabric.

5. If food allergies is an issue make sure you take easy-to-prepare “safe” foods and don’t eat any new foods that could trigger a reaction.

6. Educate you and your family on how to recognize poisonous plants, including poison ivy, oak, and sumac so you can avoid these triggers. If you would happen to come into contract with any of them, immediately wash off the infected area with soap and cold water thoroughly to help prevent or reduce a reaction.

7. Do not set in front of a campfire, since smoke can trigger a reaction especially if you are using wood that you aren’t familiar with. This is especially a problem with people who have allergic asthma.

Check out the AAAAI website for helpful information on camping with allergies and asthma--http://www.aaaai.org/conditions-and-treatments/just-for-kids/key.aspx

Living with allergies and asthma is always a challenge for anyone but especially for children. Coping with reactions, but still being able to take part in activities that they enjoy such as camping is very important.  I hope some of my suggestion that I have provided will help you or any of your family members that have allergies or asthma avoid any unpleasant reactions and be able to enjoy life to the fullest!

“5 Reasons to Use 5-HTP–The Serotonin Precursor!”

"5-HTP Natural Remedy"Today my friends, I would like to discuss today a natural remedy that helps treat a variety of conditions that are normally related to the CNS (central nervous system) and with stress, which most of us have no lack of in our lives. This product is called 5-HTP.

Since it is Mental Health Awareness week I thought I would continue to give you more useful information about anxiety, stress, and related conditions that so many people suffer from in our hectic society today.

Serotonin production declines with age, and at any age increased stress can further compromise decreased levels. Low levels of serotonin are most commonly manifested by depressed mood, anxiety, and insomnia. They can also lead to various other complaints and disorders which I will explain further, diminishing one’s quality of life. But now something can be done–supplementing with 5-HTP.

5-HTP is an aromatic amino acid naturally produced by the body from the essential acid L-tryptophan (LT), and is produced commercially by extraction from the seeds of the African plant called Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-HTP had been used clinically for over 30 years. It is used because of its great ability to produce serotonin in the brain.

Serotonin levels have been implicated in the regulation of sleep, depression, anxiety, aggression, appetite, temperature, sexual behavior, and pain sensation.  Therapeutic administration of 5-HTP has been used to treat depression, fibromyalgia, binge eating associated with obesity, chronic headaches, and insomnia.

5 Clinically Proven Benefits:

1. Depression: Since the early 1970′s at least 15 studies have evaluated the clinical effects of 5-HTP of depression. On one study –Out of 511 patients with different types of depression and the 56% showed significant improvement while taking 5-HTP. When tested on bipolar and unipolar depression 69% has significant improvement without any significant side effects within 2 weeks.

2.Fibromyalgia: When used on fibromyalgia syndrome which is characterized by general musculoskeletal aching and sometimes times several pain, multiple tender points, fatigue, morning stiffness, and sleep disturbances.

Fibromyalgia patients have been found to have low serotonin and tryptophan levels which is also shows in depression patients. In a study of 50 patients with fibromyalgia syndrome that were given 100 mg of 5-HTP for 90 days all showed improvement in all the symptoms, but 15 (30%) patients reported side effects and only 1 case was severe enough that they had to withdrawn from the study.

3. Chronic Headaches: especially migraines are considered by researchers to be the result of low serotonin levels which is thought to lower pain thresholds in chronic headaches suffers. This is turn allows triggers that cause headaches to be more easily set off and cause the pain. In a study of 48 elementary and junior high students that suffered from chronic headaches a 70% decrease in headache frequency when given 5-HTP daily.

4. Insomnia5-HTP has been shown to be beneficial in treating insomnia especially improving sleep quality by increasing REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

5. Obesity: During dieting, serum tryptophan levels and CNS serotonin levels drop dramatically and these low serotonin levels in obese patients have been associated with carbohydrate cravings and resulting in binge eating. 3 clinical trials have demonstrated decreased foods intake with subsequent weight loss while taking 5-HTP supplement. The theory is that 5-HTP can help to prevent the decline in serotonin associated with dieting. At the University of Rome researchers used a placebo-controlled double-blind protocol to evaluate the effects of 5-HTP. The placebo group did not experience any significant weight loss, but the 5-HTP group did show significant weight loss.

5-HTP alone is available for those who do not wish to use it in a formulation. In general, it has few to no side effects. Because of the many benefits that 5-HTP can offer,  several advanced formulations give a range of options for people with a variety of personal needs.

"5-HTP the Natural Remedy"Recommended Dosage:

There is no RDA for 5-HTP,  depending on the condition being treated, dosage ranges from 50-100mg taken 3x/day (150-300 total). If you start taking 5-HTP supplements, it is recommended that you slowly and gradually increase your dose, which will reduce the likelihood of side effects. Supplements should be taken on an empty stomach for quicker absorption, and 30 minutes before meals if the reason for taking it is appetite suppressing for weight.

In my opinion it is always better to take a natural remedy than to take a drug that could have many dangerous side effect or adverse reactions. As always I suggest you consult your health-care provider before using any supplement, especially if you are already taking medication for any of these conditions!
